Eid al-Fitr 2023 Likely to Fall on Saturday, April 22 in Saudi Arabia
UPDATE: Eid al-Fitr to be Celebrated in Saudi Arabia on Friday, April 21
Eid Al Fitr 2023: Expected Date in Saudi Arabia
The holy month of Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims around the world. It is a time of spiritual renewal and an opportunity to deepen one’s connection with Allah. At the end of this holy month, Muslims celebrate Eid Al Fitr, which is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar. This year, the International Astronomy Center has predicted that Eid Al Fitr will fall on Saturday, April 22, 2023, in Saudi Arabia. However, the exact date will only be confirmed based on the sighting of the crescent of the month of Shawwal, which will be investigated on Thursday, April 20.
Moon Sighting Conditions
According to the International Astronomy Center, citing the crescent on Thursday is nearly impossible with the naked eye or a telescope in most Arab and Islamic countries, except parts of West Africa. Specific conditions, such as an accurate telescope, a professional observer, and exceptional weather, are required for the sighting to be possible. Based on this principle, the center predicts Eid Al Fitr to fall on Saturday, April 22.
Saudi Arabia’s Call to Sight the Shawwal Crescent
In accordance with tradition, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has called upon Muslims to look for the Shawwal crescent on Thursday, April 20, 2023. Muslims in the kingdom are encouraged to report any sightings of the crescent to the nearest court or contact center.
Holiday Declaration
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Developments (MHRSD) has announced a four-day break for employees in the private sector. The four-day holiday is scheduled to start on Friday, April 21, 2023.
