Understanding Overtime in Saudi Arabia

Overtime pay is calculated from monthly basic salary. The basic hourly wage is increased by a 50% premium, which equals 1.5 times the basic hourly wage.

What counts as overtime?

  • Hours beyond 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week.
  • Hours beyond 6 hours per day or 36 hours per week during Ramadan for Muslim employees.
  • All hours worked on public holidays and official vacations.
  • Hours above the weekly standard when the employer uses a weekly-hours system.

Common exceptions

Some senior management roles, preparatory or intermittent work, guards, cleaners, domestic workers and special work patterns may follow different rules or separate regulations.

Compensatory leave

HRSD guidance allows paid compensatory leave instead of overtime wages only with the worker's consent. Without that consent, the cash overtime formula remains the default.
