The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has recently announced updated regulations governing the carriage and use of power banks on flights operating through Saudi airports. The new measures align with the latest safety standards issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
According to GACA, passengers are now permitted to carry a maximum of two power banks, and they must be packed in carry-on baggage inside the aircraft cabin. Power banks are not permitted in checked baggage.
The updated rules also prohibit recharging power banks during flights. In addition, passengers are advised not to use power banks to charge electronic devices while onboard.
The authority said the revised regulations are based on amendments to ICAO’s Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air (Doc 9284). The changes are intended to reduce potential fire risks associated with lithium battery-powered devices and further strengthen aviation safety.
