Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior announced on Thursday that it has carried out the death sentence against a Pakistani national convicted of smuggling heroin into the Kingdom.
According to the ministry, the individual, identified as Muhammad Salim, was found guilty of attempting to smuggle heroin into Saudi Arabia.
Security authorities arrested the suspect, and following an investigation, he was referred to the competent court, where he was formally charged and tried.
The court found him guilty and sentenced him to death under Ta’zir (discretionary punishment under Islamic law).
The ministry said the verdict became final after it was upheld by the Court of Appeal and later affirmed by the Supreme Court.
A Royal Order was subsequently issued to enforce the ruling, and the sentence was carried out in the Makkah Region on Thursday.
In its statement, the Ministry of Interior reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting citizens and residents from the dangers of drugs by imposing the strictest legal penalties on drug smugglers and traffickers.
The ministry also warned that anyone involved in drug smuggling or trafficking into Saudi Arabia will face the penalties prescribed under the Kingdom’s laws.
