10 Things to Know About 3-Month Iqama Renewal for Domestic Workers

After announcing the new option to issue and renew Iqamas for domestic workers in three-month periods, Saudi authorities have also answered several common questions to help employers understand how the service works.

Here are the main points explained by the General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat).

Available in 3-month multiples

Iqamas can now be issued or renewed for three months or multiples of three months, depending on the available options in the system. Employers are not restricted to a full one-year renewal.

Applies to both new and renewed Iqamas

The service is available not only for renewing an existing Iqama but also when issuing a domestic worker’s residency permit for the first time.

Employers can change the duration

The selected renewal period is not permanent. Employers may choose a different available duration each time they issue or renew the Iqama.

Apply through Absher

The service is available electronically through the employer’s Absher account after paying the required fees using the available banking channels.

No increase in residency fees

Jawazat clarified that selecting a three-month renewal period does not increase the government residency fee. Splitting the payment into quarterly periods does not make the total amount higher.

Other government charges still apply

The service includes the applicable residency permit fee together with any other government charges required under the relevant regulations.

No separate application required

Employers do not need to submit a special request. The option is included within the normal Iqama issuance and renewal process.

Fees are calculated from the expiry date

When renewing an Iqama, the new residency period and related fees are calculated from the expiry date of the previous permit rather than the date on which the renewal is completed.

Late renewal penalties remain

The introduction of quarterly renewals does not remove penalties for late issuance or renewal. Existing fines continue to apply where applicable.

More flexibility for employers

The quarterly option is designed to make residency fee payments more flexible while helping employers better manage their financial obligations without increasing the overall cost.
