Get Ready for the Launch of Riyadh Parking Project

The Riyadh Municipality has installed 60 solar-powered electronic payment machines for the Riyadh Parking project, along with 180 directional signs, as part of its pilot phase, which launched two weeks ago.

The project includes more than 2,000 public parking spots on commercial streets, as well as over 17,000 unpaid managed parking spaces in nearby residential neighborhoods. The full launch of the project is set for next month.

These managed parking spaces in residential areas aim to protect residents by preventing cars from overflowing into their neighborhoods from paid parking zones. To differentiate between residents’ vehicles and others, the Riyadh Parking app will issue special residential permits, ensuring locals can access unpaid parking in their areas.

During the pilot phase, parking is free of charge. However, after the official launch in October, hourly fees will apply for public parking in commercial areas. The Riyadh Parking app will offer secure, multiple payment options.

A unique feature of the project is the 15-minute grace period before parking fees are applied, giving drivers some flexibility in case they need to leave shortly after parking.

The pilot phase saw the project’s website receive 500,000 visits, and over 7,000 users registered on the app, which offers various digital payment options and is available on both iOS and Android.

This first phase of the project has been designed after studying similar local and international initiatives to avoid common challenges. It targets the organization of over 140,000 unpaid parking spots in residential neighborhoods and more than 24,000 paid spots on commercial streets, making it easier for drivers to find parking and improving overall mobility in the city.

The initial phase covers 12 areas, including the neighborhoods of Al-Wurud, Al-Rahmaniyah, West Al-Olaya, Al-Muruj, King Fahd, and Al-Sulaimaniah, along with four other neighborhoods in the southern part of Riyadh. The goal is to manage parking in a way that boosts local businesses by increasing activity near public parking areas.

The Riyadh Parking project is part of a larger city-wide plan aimed at improving the quality of life in the capital by organizing parking, introducing smart and innovative solutions, and reducing disorganized parking practices. This will make it easier for drivers to find parking and enhance their overall experience.
