The General Directorate of Civil Defense has urged residents and businesses across Saudi Arabia to carry out regular maintenance of electrical systems in homes and commercial establishments to reduce the risk of electrical fires.
According to the authority, many electrical fires can be prevented by following basic safety practices and ensuring that electrical installations are properly maintained.
Faulty or Poor Electrical Wiring
Civil Defense said one of the leading causes of electrical fires is unsafe or faulty electrical wiring and connections. Damaged, loose, or poorly installed wiring can overheat and increase the risk of fire.
Overloaded Electrical Sockets
Another common cause is overloading electrical sockets with appliances or devices that exceed their designed capacity. Using too many high-power devices on a single outlet can lead to overheating and electrical fires.
Missing Automatic Circuit Breakers
The authority also warned that failing to install automatic circuit breakers is a major fire risk. Circuit breakers help cut off the electrical supply when faults occur, reducing the chance of overheating and fire.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense encouraged everyone to follow the safety guidelines and awareness messages it publishes through various media channels and social media platforms.
In emergency situations, residents should call 911 in the regions of Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, and 998 in all other regions of Saudi Arabia to request assistance.
